Keith Lee (aka Keith)
Special thanks go to;
- Tony (a.k.a the Doc) - the only person that works on my car.
- Kosta (a.k.a. Ouzo Powered/Greek Lude) - for selling me his header!
After surfing on PreludeOnline.com and reading the debate over the 97-98 versus the 99-01 Prelude OEM header and that the 99-01 header was better designed which gave the 99-01 Preludes that extra 5 hpr, I decided I would get the 99-01 header since I have a 97 Prelude. I used to have DCSports CC headers (which I sold) which I believe helped me get 173.4 whpr when I dynoed it so I know how important it is to have a good exhaust flow... I took Kosta's 2001 headers off his hands and decided to take mine off to see if there were any true design differences. If there were, I would install the 2001 header instead. I snapped away with my digital camera to finally put the 97-98 vs 99-01 header debate to rest.
The header on the left is the 1997 and the right is the 2001 -
Don't let the camera angle fool you. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN DESIGN OR SIZING OF THE PIPES!
The bottom of the exhaust manifold where the 2 outlets are, look larger on the 97 but I measured it and it's the exact same size of the 2001.
I was hoping the difference lies in the A-Pipe... I WAS WRONG! 2001 (left) vs 1997 (right) -
And a picture for reference of my old DC Sports CC headers -
There is no visual differences 97-98 and 99-01 header. From what I understand, the part numbers are even the same for the 2 headers. There could be a difference internally but the only true way to find out if there is a real difference is to get a new 97-98 header and a new 99-01 header and dyno them on the same car. My opinion? If you are thinking about getting an aftermarket header for your 5th Prelude, go for it. One thing I have to say is that the DC Sports CC header design is difference than stock. The exhaust manifold is longer than stock and the it helps to have it coated in ceramic to keep the pipe cooler as well.
WAS IT A WASTE OF TIME?
No. When I took my A-Pipe off, my mechanic and I noticed that my flex pipe was starting to rot away and I was definitely experiencing an exhaust leak from it. I decided to use the A-Pipe off the 2001 Prelude and keep my exhaust manifold since I couldn't use the one from the 2001 with the studs broken in the threads. Besides mine was still fine.
